Clearing the Air: Distinguishing Truths from Myths About Lung Health

Over the last few years, there’s been much debate about whether vaping is a better alternative to smoking when it comes to lung health. As a result, policymakers, health professionals, and the public all have their own opinions about vaping and whether it’s actually a positive contribution to our society.

Despite this, thanks to endless vape deals, new products, and other advancements, vaping continues to grow in popularity. Therefore, if you’re a vaper, it’s important to navigate your way through the sea of information that you’re provided with. This often means separating evidence-based facts from fiction; however, this isn’t to say that all concerns about vaping and lung health are invalid. Instead, you should be approaching the topic with a balanced perspective, allowing you to acknowledge both the risks and the harm-reducing potential of vaping.

The Myth of “Harmless Water Vapor”

While it’s extremely likely that vaping is better for lung health than smoking, one of the biggest myths circulating about vaping is that “harmless water vapor” is inhaled and exhaled. Quite simply, e-liquid is comprised of much more than just water vapor; instead, it consists of fine particles that get suspended in the air, which can contain harmful chemicals like flavorings and nicotine. As a result, vaping shouldn’t be picked up as a habit by non-smokers; instead, it should be adopted by ex-smokers who are looking for an avenue to quit. This is because vapes are by no means good for you, but evidence suggests they’re the better alternative to cigarettes.

Understanding Lung Irritation and Inflammation

Those who aren’t in favor of vaping typically express their concerns about the potential inflammation and irritation of the lungs caused by vaping aerosols. Although studies have identified irritation in the lungs of vapers, it’s important to bear the context of this in mind. For instance, vaping is typically adopted by former smokers, meaning that this irritation could be a result of years of cigarette smoke.

Meanwhile, some vapers use products that aren’t standardized, meaning these could contain ingredients that are more harmful than what can be found in a high-quality vape. Legitimate vape manufacturers have a duty of care to their customers, meaning that well-made vapes must undergo endless testing to ensure that the product is suitable for consumption. As a result, legitimate vapes are less likely to cause lung irritation.

The Role of Flavorings and Lung Health

It’s also thought that the flavorings of e-liquids have the potential to affect lung health. This is because it could be the case that specific flavoring compounds could be more harmful than others when inhaled. As a result, respiratory issues can become a problem; however, there’s still plenty of research surrounding this. Quite simply, the vast majority of e-liquid flavors are safe for consumption, as responsible manufacturers will adhere to the necessary guidelines to maintain consumer well-being. The real risk comes from black-market products, so it’s essential that vaping products are purchased from reputable brands.

Vaping as a Harm Reduction Tool

Vapes are constantly being criticized in the media; however, their primary benefit is often overlooked. These products are commonly adopted by individuals who are looking to quit smoking and rid their bodies of the toxic chemicals and addiction that come with it. What’s more, vapes allow you to reduce the amount of nicotine you’re consuming, meaning they’re a great avenue for weaning yourself off nicotine. This isn’t to say that vapes are completely risk-free, but currently, the evidence suggests that they’re not packed full of poisons like traditional cigarettes. Consequently, vapes are thought to be predominantly positive additions to our society.
